Svetlana Yakov, MD, PhD


Dr. Svetlana Yakov grew up in Russia and  graduated from Chuvash State University. She worked as an internist and acupuncture doctor. She then entered a Neurology residency and subsequent combined fellowship/PhD program in Medicine/Neuroscience in Moscow. She completed her dissertation on the efficacy DBS in Parkinson’s Disease and worked for a few years in the Russian Movement Disorder Center. At Kaplan Medical School in Chicago she continued research Neuropsychiatry. She completed her second residency in Psychiatry at the University of Alabama in 2016. During her residency she was actively involved in the treatment of refractory depression using Ketamine and leadership in a sensory integration project resulting in reduction of agitation and restraints on inpatient units. Dr. Yakov worked as an assistant professor after graduation from residency and managed psychiatric patients with medical comorbidities and addiction on inpatient units. Before joining Billings Clinic, Dr. Yakov worked as an outpatient Psychiatrist in private practice in Birmingham, Alabama. Her current clinical interests include treatment resistant mood disorders,  and depression and cognitive disorders in people with metabolic, endocrine, nutritional, respiratory/sleep conditions, and substance use disorders.

Dr. Yakov enjoys spending time outdoors and attending yoga classes. Her hobbies include oil painting and sewing.
